Units:
1. "What Makes a 'Hit' Song?" - We will be exploring the elements of song writing such as form, lyrics, instrumentation, use of a "hook", and length. We will be listening to various examples of 'hit' songs to determine what makes them successful.
2. "Where Have I Heard This Before?" - We will be learning how artists sample or borrow existing material to create new music. We will learn how artists cover songs to pay respect to the creators and to give the songs their own "spin". We will also learn about different artists that use looping techniques to create many sounds with few instruments.
3. "“How Does a Style of Music Change Overtime?” - We will study the birth of Jazz Music in Harlem, NY. Then, we will study the birth of Hip Hop in Brooklyn/the Bronx NY and compare how Jazz influenced later styles of music.
4. "How Did the Radio Impact the World?" - We will create a timeline of the invention and presence of radio. We will also learn about FDR's Fireside Chats and create our own versions. You will be creating a Radio Station, and producing a radio show in the form of a podcast.
5. "How Does Music Affect a TV Show?" - We will learn about different styles of composing for television shows, specifically cartoon composing and theme songs.
