Students Who Should Consider Taking This Course:
Open to students who wish to learn about musical cultures from around the world, including Africa, Caribbean, India, China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, the Middle East, Latin America, and North America. Any student planning to apply to a college music program should take this course along with students who are focusing their studies on cultural diversity.
Students will explore the relationship between cultural context and the various forms of musical expression while enabling them to aurally identify a variety of instruments and musical styles. While studying the basic elements of music, such as melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture, and form, students will also better understand the attitudes, biases, and assumptions about music that we share—as products of a particular culture. Each student will be able to perform in small ensembles using world percussion instruments as well as partake in group composing activities.
